Portia Lee James DeGeneres (also called Portia de Rossi) is a known Australian and American actress, model, and philanthropist. In the year 15 she legally changed her name, adopting her Italian surname "de Rossi" which was glamorous. She took the name "Portia" in Shakespeare's performance of The Merchant of Venice. Portia thinks that this was her most adventurous act she's ever attempted and declared that the need to change her name driven by her personal struggle with her sexuality. Portia was introduced to the world of film with the romantic comedy drama "Sirens," in which she starred alongside Hugh Grant. She also appeared in several American TV shows and films including Too Something, Nick Freno, the Licensed Teacher, Arrested Development, and, Better Off Ted. She gained fame for her performance in a Boston-based lawyer, called Nelle Porter, in a television comedy show called Ally McBeal. Her character played the lead character in the show's comedy relief.
